This Romantic Realignments, we will have the very distinguished Professor Frederick Burwick joining us from UCLA to speak about 'Shakespearean Pantomime: the Dumbshow of Kemble and Siddons'.

We urge all interested to come along - you do not have to be a Romanticist or an English student! We hope to have a large turnout and welcome Fred in the UK. After the seminar, we will be convening for drinks and continued conversation at a local watering hole and invite all that wish to join us for dinner!

Kate Barush on 'Blake's Illuminated Manuscripts'

Blake printed his poetry in a unique, striking, and beautiful manner, and the experience of his works as artefacts and artistic productions as well as text is crucial to understanding them. This lecture will introduce and explain the methods through which Blake produced his illuminated books and their importance to his mythopoesis, as well as providing the interpretative tools necessary to discuss and analyse Blake's unique composite art. Blake's artistic background and training will be explained, key works examined, and his oppositional iconography and stylistic devices explored. This will be an engaging and valuable session to those interested in Blake and/or illuminated texts.

South Coast Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Research Group (SCERRG)

We are pleased to announce a one-day postgraduate forum on 'Women, History and Sexuality'. The conference is interdisciplinary, combining approaches from the fields of English, history and philosophy, and discussing both contemporary feminism and the literature and history writing of the long eighteenth century. The theme is a 'light' one with speakers presenting on a variety of topics.

Plenary speakers are: Dr Sue Morgan (Chichester), editor of The Feminist History Reader; and Dr Nina Power (Roehampton), author of One Dimensional Women (2009), speaking on issues in contemporary feminism. In Austen’s Northanger Abbey (1818), her naive but ingenuous heroine Catherine Moreland notoriously pronounces that ‘real solemn history ‘either vex[es] or wear[ies]’ her: ‘the men all so good for nothing, and hardly any women at all’. Nonetheless, the eighteenth-century saw a rapid expansion in the forms of historical discourse, including a new emphasis on histories about and by women, and an invigoration of fictionalised forms of history. This forum will examine women’s often troubled relationship with the discourses of history and sexuality.

GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE IN 18TH CENTURY AND ROMANTIC STUDIES - ENGLISH FACULTY, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE - EXTERNAL RESPONDENT: PROFESSOR VIC GATRELL.

This conference run by students for students provides the opportunity for graduate students from around the country to discuss their research in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. It provides an excellent first conference experience for new graduate students, but the range of panels chaired by eighteenth century and Romantic studies experts from the University of Cambridge are equally suitable for PhD and post-doctoral students. Papers need only relate to one aspect of the conference title.

The English Faculty's Graduate Seminar in Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Studies will host a two-day conference on satire and visual arts in the long eighteenth century. We invite academic paper proposals from graduate students and post-docs that explore this theme from a literary or interdisciplinary perspective and may focus on any aspect of the period.

Papers may consider but are not limited to: - Satire of individuals, institutions or society and its role in poetry, prose (either factual or fictional), or drama - Visual arts, print culture, and forms of visual representation - Visual satire or the relationship between any of the above

We welcome papers from a variety of arts and humanities disciplines (historians, art historians etc.) and submissions need not be limited to students of English Literature.

Papers should last no more than 20 minutes. Proposals should take the form of a 500-word abstract, to be submitted by 3rd April 2009 at noon.

Impossible Dialogue?: Irish Studies and Utopian Studies

A one-day workshop on 27 March 2009 at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford.

The day will bring together scholars from different disciplines to debate the persistence of utopian impulses in Irish political, social and cultural history. Ireland functions as a case study to question linear models of change from tradition to modernity or postmodernity, or from colonial to postcolonial – one that is particularly relevant given the recent developments in the Irish political and economic landscape. The critical framework of Utopianism allows us to think about the experience of living under any set of conditions, by reflecting upon the desires which those conditions generate and yet leave unfulfilled. Thus the day's workshop is about reflecting on Utopian methodology as the most suited to enable future debates within Irish studies and ultimately postcolonial studies.

BURNS AND THE POETS

A CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT SOMERVILLE COLLEGE, 25/26 MARCH, 2009
TO CELEBRATE THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF ROBERT BURNS.

ORGANISERS: FIONA STAFFORD, Somerville College, Oxford, OX2 6HD, and BERNARD O’DONOGHUE, Wadham College, Oxford, OX1 3PN

2009 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns. ‘Burns and the Poets’ will take place in Oxford, gathering together scholars, critics, musicians and practising poets to celebrate the astonishing achievement and legacy of Robert Burns. The focus is on Burns as a poet and in relation to other poets – not only his own predecessors, contemporaries and literary heirs, but also leading contemporary poets. In order to explore Burns’s achievement as creatively as possible, there will be scholarly and critical papers on various aspects of his work, including the language, literary connections and influences, philosophical and political contexts, music, biography, reception and material culture. There will also be poetry readings, performances of the songs and personal responses by practising poets. The combination of creative and critical work seems an appropriate way to pay tribute to Burns, as well as contributing to the development of a new understanding of the poetry by drawing together critical and practical approaches.

The first day of the Conference begins at 12 noon on 25th March, with an Opening Address from one of Scotland’s most distinguished poets, Douglas Dunn, and concludes with a Poetry reading by Douglas Dunn, Don Paterson and Robert Crawford. The Conference will conclude on Thursday 26th March, with an evening of music and poetry featuring Bernard O’Donoghue, Tom Paulin and Mick Henry. Both days will offer a full programme of lectures, papers and round table discussions.

Dr Price began his academic studies in the sciences, studying Human Sciences at UCL and then gaining an MSc in Neuroscience at Oxford. His work then shifted to history, in which he gained his doctorate entitled "The Emergence of the Doctrine of the "Sentient Brain" in Britain, 1650-1850". At this week’s seminar Dr Price will be focusing on Coleridge’s concept of the “Sentient Brain”, a phrase which appeared in his 1794 poem ‘Religious Musings’. He has published both scientific and historical articles and a chapter on "Priestley and Theories of the Brain" in J. S. Birch and J.Lee (eds). Joseph Priestley: A Celebration of His Life and Legacy (2007), pp. 206-213.

Identifying Coleridge: The Detection of Authorial Style

Last term OUP published a new edition of Goethe's Faustus, in an impressive but anonymous 1821 translation that had previously been attributed to George Soane. The editors, Fred Burwick of UCLA and Jim McKusick of Montana, had long suspected that the real author might be Coleridge, based on the translation's magnificent style and some circumstantial evidence. Objective proof, however, eluded them until McKusick hit upon the idea of using computer-aided "stylometry" in the form of Signature, a software package published in 2003 by Peter Millican (Director of the Electronic Text Centre at Leeds, now Philosophy Fellow at Hertford, and an eighteenth-century scholar). McKusick's subsequent analysis provided solid statistical support for what has been described as " the biggest breakthrough in Coleridge scholarship in a hundred years".

In this talk, Peter Millican will be explaining McKusick's methods, whilst unveiling the new version of the Signature system and illustrating its potential for illuminating literary mysteries, from Aristotle and the Bible to Shakespeare and the eighteenth-century novel. Version 2.0 has been greatly enhanced, with a range of new user-friendly tools for exploring both authorship and the development of literary style. The main aim is to persuade scholars that stylometry is a worthy and fascinating addition to their repertoire of research methods, but also to offer assistance in future projects.

Professor Porée's interests are incredibly varied. His main research areas are Romanticism and contemporary British and postcolonial literature. In the field of Romanticism he has written a book about de Quincey and worked on Byron, Keats, and Burns among others. In other areas he's written a book on Salman Rushdie and worked on Kazuo Ishiguro and Graham Swift. He has coedited a collected edition of Robert Louis Stevenson translations for the prestigious Pleiade collection and translated texts by, amongst others, Stevenson and Conrad.

Carlyle called Francis Jeffrey the greatest literary critic of his time and a "Scotch Voltaire". Dr Christie will be talking about Carlyle's representation of Francis Jeffrey, founder and editor of the Edinburgh review. Carlyle met and formed a friendship with Jeffrey during the lean-years spent in Scotland from 1826. His quasi-autobiographical Shandean parody of English empiricism, Sartor Resartus, was written in 1831 whilst living in Scotland before the move to London in 1834.
Dr Will Christie is author of Samuel Taylor Coleridge: A Literary Life (Basingstoke, Hants, and New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). His current projects include:

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has this mention of Tatham:

"Through Linnell, a group of young artists met Blake and came to admire him greatly, both for his character and his art. They looked upon him as a seer or Old Testament prophet come to life; in turn, Blake's peace of mind was enhanced by finding a worshipful audience. [...] This loose brotherhood of Blake followers, one that also included Francis Oliver Finch, Frederick Tatham, and Welby Sherman, called themselves ‘The Ancients’ and often sought their own intense responses to nature in the environs of Shoreham, Kent, which Blake visited in late summer 1825."

Tatham wrote a biography of Blake, and is also known for burning some of his manuscripts when he inherited them.

Its aura of mystery has never been adequately explained. This presentation will first summarize, and put in context, numerous discoveries, past and present, regarding the puzzles of Emma, particularly those in Chapter 9.

Professor Nicholas Halmi, University of Washington

Nicholas Halmi is Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of Washington. He has edited editions of Coleridge and Northrop Frye and is on the editorial board of MLQ. His paper will be drawn from his forthcoming book which offers an historical explanation for the Romantic concept of the symbol.
